Our Abbotsford plant
is equipped with Astec's Gen-II Double Barrel Green system that
provides the ability to produce asphalt at temperatures lower than
conventionally produced hot-mix asphalt.
Benefits of these reduced
temperatures are:
- Reduced energy consumption.
- Decreased greenhouse gas emissions.
- Elimination of visible smoke and odor.
- Less oxidation of the asphalt binder.
- Improved workability.
Proper coating of the
aggregate at lower temperatures is accomplished by injecting a small
amount of water into the asphalt cement before it enters the mixing
chamber. When the water hits the hot liquid AC it turns to steam
and causes the AC to expand creating a foam. This change to the
physical properties of the asphalt cement is temporary.
The new Astec Gen-II
system is a simplified and more reliable version of the original
design.
